FAQ

System Requirements

Is Audirvana Plus compatible with macOS Sierra, HighSierra?

Audirvana Plus since its 3.1.5 version is fully compatible with the latest version of macOS, 10.13 also called HighSierra, except for Direct Mode that has been broken by an Apple regression.

Starting with release 3.1.5, the Direct Mode option is hidden if it is not available (not patched Sierra or higher).

See blog post for more details on this

Is Audirvana Plus compatible with Yosemite, El Capitan?

Audirvana Plus since its 2.2.1 version is fully compatible with OS X 10.11 also called El Capitan, and since its 2.0.3 with OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).

Please note that some DACs  require a specific driver to be installed on OS X.
This driver may need an update for El Capitan. It thus may be worthwhile to contact your DAC manufacturer about the supplied driver compatibility.

What are the minimum system requirements?

Audirvana Plus needs at a minimum:

  • A 64bit Mac (Core 2 Duo or later)
  • OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or later.
  • 2GB RAM as a bare minimum

However, for a best experience, it is recommended to have:

  • OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) or later
  • 4GB RAM or more

I have a Mac that can’t run Mavericks. Can I get an older version?

Sure, you can get Audirvana Plus 2.2.5 that still runs on Snow Leopard.

Purchasing / License

On how many computers can I install Audirvana Plus with a single license?

As per the EULA, it is permitted to proceed to “the installation on a second computer owned by you for your exclusive use with the express condition that this second copy is not used simultaneously with the main one”.

Where is the license key I’ve purchased?

Have you received the mail from Avangate after your purchase? It contains your license key.

You’ll enter it when prompted in Audirvana Plus. For more details, you can refer to the installation instructions

I’ve lost my license key, how can I retrieve it?

The easiest way would be to find the email from Avangate that contains your license key.

Otherwise, you can retrieve it directly from avangate.com:

Go to the “Shopper Support” section of avangate.com

Then to “My Account”

You’ll need to use the email address used for the purchase and your order #

And you’ll have access to your license key.

How can I transfer my license to a new Mac?

To transfer Audirvana Plus from one Mac to another, you need first to uninstall it from the old one:

  1. Use the De-authorize computer command of the Audirvana Plus menu
  2. Delete the application file

Then you install Audirvana Plus on the new Mac as you did on the old one (installing the trial version, then entering your license key)

In addition, for your information, per the license contract, it is permitted to proceed to “the installation on a second computer owned by you for your exclusive use with the express condition that this second copy is not used simultaneously with the main one”.

I still have an Audirvana Plus 2 license, how can I retrieve the corresponding old version of the program?

If you still have an Audirvana Plus 2 license and have not yet upgraded to the current Audirvana Plus 3:

Audirvana Plus 2.6.8 program can be downloaded here

For those having a system still running on OS X 10.8 or earlier, the latest compatible version is Audirvana Plus 2.2.6 that is available here.

Technical

I get some dropouts for around a second each in the middle of the track

The main reason for this is memory swapping to disk, namely the audio buffer currently playing.

This is due to insufficient memory available for storing the audio buffers. To prevent this situation to occur, you can exit other memory hungry applications (e.g. Safari), and/or reduce the maximum audio buffers size (User Preferences > Audio System)

I get some clicks about 3-10 times a second

You probably have a Mac whose model has been introduced before 2008 end. These models have a limitation in their USB ports power supply that makes a few samples to be set to 0 every ~16,000, and this only in Integer Mode. And this is what you can hear as clicks. To continue to get the benefits of the Integer Mode, the most widely used workaround consists in connecting a powered USB hub between the DAC and the Mac. (With only the DAC connected to it of course).

Why can’t Safari, Firefox, or any other program play audio when Audirvana Plus is playing?

Audirvana Plus takes exclusive access of the audio device (usually your DAC) to be able to apply its advanced optimizations during playback.

Thus no other application (e.g. Safari, Firefox) can play to the same audio device until Audirvana Plus is in stop mode. If another audio device is available (e.g. built-in output), OS X will try to fall back to this other audio device for playing the audio sent by another application.

When playback is stopped, Audirvana Plus releases the audio device, and OS X gets it back for use by any other running program.

Why is the OS X output switching to built-in output during playback?

Audirvana Plus takes exclusive access of the audio device (usually your DAC) to be able to apply its advanced optimizations during playback.

Thus OS X needs to fall back on another available audio device and thus the audio output switches usually to built-in output.

When playback is stopped, Audirvana Plus releases the audio device, and OS X gets it back for use by any other running program.

Can Audirvana Plus play to my Airplay devices?

Audirvana Plus can stream to an AirPlay compatible device.

If you have Mavericks or later with a recent (mid 2011) Mac, you can simply select “AirPlay” as the DAC in Audirvana Plus user preferences.

Otherwise you can use a third party software like AirFoil for doing that.

In addition, be sure iTunes is not set to use the Airplay device, and that “Airplay” is not the selected output audio in System Preferences.

There is a regression in OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) that makes the AirPlay device unavailable (it is not even listed in Audio Midi Setup application). Until Apple fixes this, there is a workaround to get it back:

  1. Option click on the loudspeaker icon on the menu bar
  2. Select AirPlay in the selection menu that appears

If the loudspeaker icon is not displayed on the menu bar, you can show it by going to System Preferences, Sounds page, and set the “Show loudness in menu bar” option.

Unfortunately this won’t give back Airplay playback in all cases. It seems to be model dependent. It doesn’t work on my Macbook Pro Retina, but works perfectly on the Macbook Air!

The information in Audio Midi Setup seems incorrect, is this normal?

Audirvana Plus makes use of optimizations not known by regular CoreAudio (e.g. Integer Mode).

Audio Midi Setup is using the standard CoreAudio functions to retrieve its information that then may not be correct during Audirvana Plus playback.

Is it possible to use room correction, equalizer, ... filters?

Since the 1.5 release, Audirvana Plus supports AudioUnit filter plugins. Setting is available from the AudioUnits page of the user preferences.

This gives access to the large number of EQ, room correction, headphone crossover filters available on the market.
And you can already start with the EQ filters supplied with OS X.

Some audio tracks are not imported/do not show in the library

It is quite possible these audio files do not have the title, artist, album, … metadata tags that would have enabled them to be correctly catalogued and found easily.
In this case, they appear with only a title that is their filename. And are thus usually sorted (with the default sort priorities) at the very beginning of the track list.
Editing their metadata will enable to give them the correct track title, artist name, album.

Why do I get duplicated tracks when importing my whole music folder (that contains the iTunes media folder)?

The issue comes from iTunes that duplicates the audio files when importing them, unless the Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library setting in its advanced preferences is unselected:
The solution is then to either only synchronize the iTunes library, and not the folder that contains the original audio files (before being duplicated by iTunes in its iTunes media folder), or to synchronize only the folders containing the original audio files.

A+ Remote

It can’t connect to / find the Mac running Audirvana Plus

  1. Be sure to have Audirvana Plus version 2.2 or later running, in Library mode independent from iTunes
  2. Ensure that your Mac running Audirvana Plus and your iPad/iPhone/iPod touch running A+ Remote are connected to the same local network. There must not be any router in between.
  3. Check your Mac firewall settings: In the “System Preferences”, Open “Security and Privacy”, then go to “Firewall” tab, and click on “Firewall options…”. There check if the option “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” is selected. If not, you have to add Audirvana Plus to the list just above of applications allowed to have incoming connections. And “Block all incoming connections” must not be selected. If you use other firewall software (or hardware), ensure it allows has open UDP port 5353 that is used by the Bonjour protocol Multicast DNS.
  4. Reboot your WiFi router as it may not forward anymore the Bonjour multicast requests (The Apple Remote app that controls iTunes may not be able to connect to iTunes as well until the WiFi router reboot)
  5. Check that you don’t have a program preempting the remote access to your Mac such as Parallels Access.

It can’t reconnect after some inactivity to the Mac

It is quite possible the Mac went to sleep with shutting down its network services including the Bonjour ones.

To prevent this, and enable A+ Remote to wake up a Mac running Audirvana Plus, open “System Preferences”, then open “Energy Saver”, and in the “Power Adapter” tab, ensure “Wake for Wi-Fi network access” is enabled.

How can I fully stop playback?

In the playing view, make a long press on the play/pause button.

A popup menu with “Stop” will then appear. Tap on it to fully stop Audirvana Plus.

This will then release the audio device, and reenable the energy savers timers, letting the Mac go to sleep.
